Anyone who has ever been interested in increasing the performance of their vehicle, inevitably had to come across terms like tuning, chip tuning , remap or some other term that this branch of the automotive industry brings with it. However, from the sea of such terms, but also masters who apply more tuning systems or improve car performance, we talked to an expert who would help us and unravel the doubts about the basic approaches to tuning that are present in the market today and pointed out their advantages and mane. The first approach to increasing car performance is known as analog tuning. This type of tuning is performed by changing the signal on the installation, ie by modifying the resistance of the cables on the electrical installation of the motor with power-box-chip devices. This approach is time consuming to develop and is based on adding or subtracting values according to experience, after which the changed parameters are measured on rollers and accessories, to compare results and performance before and after modifications, and to see the direction in which the modifications take place. Our interlocutor believes that this approach to increasing the performance of the car brings a certain level of risk to the vehicle because it requires a series of measurements that expose the vehicle to maximum effort during measurements on rollers. Another, newer, approach to increasing vehicle performance is digital tuningwhich is based on programming the motor computers of vehicles as engineers do in the factory. Namely, modern cars have an average of about 100-200,000 maps, or parameters in their computer in relation to which the engine is regulated (ratio of temperature and atmospheric pressure, the ratio of turbine pressure and fuel pressure, the ratio of fuel injection in milligrams in units of time, etc.) When chipping by remapping, these maps are changed, ie the computer computer is remapped. On modern cars, chip tuning based on remapping (digital tuning) is performed by machine programming, where the desired reinforcements are pre-set to the vehicle via precisely calculated values. In the example explained, as in racing cars, engineers and constructors know which racing part will bring how much power in combination with other parts and before installation, in machine programming of vehicles (remapping), the situation is similar. During chip tuning of vehicles with factory configuration, ie. during the setting of the desired values, the reinforcements do not go beyond the factory, which is a key prerequisite for the vehicle to maintain technical correctness. In this way, this type of tuning does not focus on maximum vehicle performance, because in that case the period of vehicle operation would be shorter, and in order to avoid such an outcome, it would also be necessary to make mechanical repairs to the vehicle. So, during the maximum chipping, both the technical correctness and the fulfillment of the regulations of the technical inspection were called into question. When chip tuning, input-output parameters are known, the results can be calculated, and it is enough to check them through auto diagnostics. According to our interlocutor, measuring power makes sense when installing sports parts, testing new solutions, experimenting, in order to achieve maximum vehicle performance outside the factory-provided framework.
As there are no two identical units in the world, so the manufacturers themselves fence themselves after the production of vehicles with a tolerance of +/- 10% of the predicted power in the vehicle specification, remapping insists on programming unique software for each individual vehicle. Namely, each engine has different maps, so it is crucial to create a unique tuning, or create a program for each vehicle separately. In this way, the vehicle gets the best, most accurate and safest performance. What we should pay special attention to, our interlocutor points out, is copying the previously made tuning for another type of vehicle, which does not correspond to other types in terms of its characteristics. This can damage the vehicle or shorten its service life.
On vehicles for daily operation, it is always best to set average increases in value (which is 20-30% in the case of turbo-diesel units) in relation to the factory settings. Thus, optimal results are obtained with multiple benefits, ie a balance is achieved between increased power, reduced consumption and preservation of vehicle life.
