What is a dental consultation? A atient consult in the sense of competent information from a neutral party also plays an important role in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the system of dental care. The Dental Association of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania responded early on to the growing need for information and advice from patients and set up a corresponding advice center in October 1995. In accordance with the ethical self-understanding of the dental profession as a healing profession, he has set himself the task of actively taking up the rights of patients.
The need of dental patients for information is increasing. Mere treatment by the dentist is not enough. The patient wants more: clarification and more information about the possibilities, but also the risks of dental treatment. The spectrum of open questions ranges from allergies, surgery, aesthetics, hypnosis, supplementary insurance to recourse claims. Very often, however, it is also necessary to know the correct procedures in the event of complaints or dissatisfaction with the dentist. Above all, growing health awareness and the desire for more transparency in the health market are reasons for wanting to be informed and – with the right information in the background – to decide independently and responsibly which treatment is the right one.
In line with consumer protection, the dental patient consult center acts as a point of contact that patients can go to without fear of entering into the wrong place and where they can ask for professional consultant. On the one hand, it should give the patient the opportunity to find out about the latest findings in dentistry, development trends, possibilities and risks of dental treatment, as well as about the questions that remain unanswered in the practices. In the case of complaints or dissatisfaction with the treatment or the accounting, either an attempt is made to clarify, the further procedure is shown or referred to another place.
For this purpose, the Dental Association of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, as a corporation under public law, has an arbitration committee in accordance with the legal basis, the Medical Professions Act of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. However, numerous problems can be clarified in advance by means of a consultation by the responsible advisory committee.
Conversation Between Patient and Dental Consultant
How does a successful conversation between dentist and patient go? By asking questions and actively listening, the dentist receives a lot of information that is important for diagnosis and treatment. Talking to the patient is crucial for the long-term success of the treatment.
Good advice in conversation
A basis of trust is important for the dentist and the patient. The dentist takes the time to talk to you and listens carefully. Studies show the lasting success of a dialogue based on partnership. The patient takes an active part in the healing process. This attitude – also known as “compliance” – increases patient satisfaction and improves the success of treatment. Involve the patient in the conversation
The effect for the dentist is just as positive: the dentist includes the patient in decisions, which means there are fewer complications. In the long term, this ensures strong patient loyalty, which is proven by statistics: 90 percent of patients in Germany remain loyal to their dentist, and over 40 percent found their dentist through recommendations.
The first conversation
Whether it’s the first visit to the dentist or a consultation, in a good therapeutic relationship dentist and patient exchange information openly. If dental treatment is pending, both participants decide together on a therapy. In the method known as Shared Decision Management, the dentist explains in detail the different options to support the shared decision.
Expert and layman: the consultation
The roles in the counseling interview are initially not equal. This is due to the difference between expert and lay knowledge. In order to create a balance, the dentist takes on the role of the medical advisor: he involves the patient in the treatment, asks what his or her expectations of the treatment are and thus fulfills his or her desire for self-determination. In order to create a familiar framework for the conversation, it is important that the doctor and patient are undisturbed and that the patient feels comfortable during the entire stay in the practice. The dentist positions himself at eye level with his patient and signals his attention and appreciation through facial expressions, gestures, listening and comprehensive explanations.
Treat successfully through conversations
Individual patient behavior has a significant influence on the success of treatments. In order to bring about a change in behavior in favor of improved oral hygiene and health in a patient, motivation is necessary above all else. The dentist achieves this through education and attention. Compassion and acceptance of the patient’s personal situation are important. He also strengthens his patient’s self-confidence by demonstrating his sense of achievement.
Consultation also about costs
The money for a treatment – e.g. B. with dentures – is not a taboo subject. The patient must be able to understand the costs and the costs must be determined as precisely as possible. Your dentist will point out that additional measures may become necessary during the course of treatment. Therefore, the cost of treatment may also increase somewhat.
